Smile Guldasta - Ahmed Hussain & Mohd. Hussain

Guldasta - Ahmed Hussain & Mohd. Hussain

Guldasta is the first album ever released by Ahmed Hussain and Mohammed Hussain, the well-known Ghazal singers. They hail from Jaipur and are the sons of the famous ghazal and thumri singer Ustad Afzal Hussain Jaipuri. They were trained most rigorously in classical music and have made a name for themselves on the music scene as being the only brother duo to be singing ghazals on the concert and recording circuit and they have equally become known for singing geets, bhajans, and even shabads.

They have made their way onto the big screen lately with their rendition of ??Aaya Tere Dar Pe Divana?? for Yash Chopra?s Veer-Zaara. The big Saregama discovery, Mohd. Vakil, is their nephew who did his training under his uncles. Guldasta was recorded sometime it would seem in the early 80s when the now Universal India was then known as Music India. The compositions are by the Hussain brothers with music arrangement by Viju Shah, the son (if I remember correctly) of Kalyanji of Kalyanji-Anandji fame. The original cassette cover itself begins with the words ??Kalyanji-Anandji presents....??

The music compositions are indeed fine ones that show a very good grasp of classical music. This isn?t not loaded with improvisation and are not necessairly even based on pure ragas but at times mixtures of ragas. The most obvious one is Savan ke Suahne Mausam which is a ragmala based on Ragas Basant, Miyan ki Malhar, and others I can?t recall at the moment. Others (Das Na Jayen Mujhko) are based on Lalit, Chal Mere Saath Hi Chal (Yaman), Ae Sanam Tujhse Jab Door Chala Jaunga (Sounds like Raga Shivranjani). The poetry in turn is fine especially Chal Mere Saath hi Chal which is one of the songs that put the Hussains on the map. The ghazal, written by the late Hasrat Jaipuri (the favorite poet of the Hussains) is just so wonderfully written and the choice of Raga Yaman suits the lyrics most nicely.

Guldasta, in a sense, set the precedent for all of their recordings up to the present. Very interesting compositions based at times on unusual ragas (Vachaspati, Nat Bhairav, Jogia, Shahana, Gunakali, Megh, Sohini, Bhatiyar, Gorakh Kalyan) yet the quality of the music arrangement and singing are constantly veering from
